Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held a telephone conversation with Acting Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mottaki, during which both sides expressed interest in strengthening mutual cooperation. This was reported on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry on July 23.

The diplomats noted that the Russian and Afghan peoples have long-standing traditions of friendship and good neighborliness.

"The parties emphasized mutual interest in increasing cooperation between the two countries in trade, economic and humanitarian fields, in strengthening regional security, including the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking," the statement said.

As Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk noted on May 16, Russia is committed to developing bilateral economic cooperation with Afghanistan and is convinced that the stability of the country meets the interests of the entire Eurasian region.

On July 1, Zamir Kabulov, the Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for Afghanistan, added that Russia and Afghanistan have built very good coordination on security issues. He also stressed that Moscow needs to support the Afghan authorities in the fight against terrorism.
