- Bloomberg has learned about the EU's plans to impose tariffs of 30% on imports from the United States
The European Union (EU) intends to impose duties of 30% on American goods worth about €100 billion in the absence of an agreement with the United States. This was reported by Bloomberg on July 23, citing sources.
It is noted that the measures will be taken if US President Donald Trump fulfills his threat to impose such a rate on most of the EU exports after August 1. It is clarified that the relevant plans appeared due to the strengthening of the positions of the EU member states, including Germany, in response to the tightening of the US position in the negotiations.
"According to people familiar with the situation, US exports, including industrial goods such as Boeing airplanes, American-made cars and bourbon, will be subject to duties, the amount of which will correspond to the 30% tariff set by Trump," the material says.
An unnamed representative of the European Commission (EC) clarified that as part of the first wave of retaliatory measures, the EU will combine the already approved list of tariffs on American goods worth €21 billion ($24 billion) and the previously proposed list for an additional €72 billion ($84 billion).
Trump announced the introduction of 3.0% duties on goods from the European Union on July 12 from August 1. The American leader stressed that tariffs would not be imposed if the EU or the bloc's companies decided to manufacture products in the United States.
EC President Ursula von der Leyen, in turn, called the imposition of duties of 30% on EU exports a violation of the most important transatlantic supply chains. According to her, this could harm businesses and consumers on both sides.
