Israel discussed transferring control of Gaza to non-Hamas structures
The Israeli authorities are discussing the possibility of transferring control of the Gaza Strip to local structures not affiliated with the Palestinian Hamas movement. This was reported to Izvestia on July 22 by a diplomatic source in Israel.
"One of the scenarios under consideration is to transfer control of Gaza to local structures. This would give Gaza a chance to self—rule without Hamas," the source explained.
Speaking about the negotiations on the release of hostages, he noted that, according to the Israeli side, about 20 hostages remain alive in Gaza, while the release of 10 of them is currently being discussed.
"The negotiations are currently focused on the return of 10 hostages out of an estimated 20 living prisoners," the source said.
Al Jazeera TV channel reported earlier in the day that at least 65 people were killed in the Gaza Strip due to Israeli strikes during the day. In particular, the city was shelled by tanks, residential buildings and mosques were damaged.
On July 21, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed alarm at the rapid deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave and called for the immediate release of the hostages.
