Sunglasses are not only a stylish element of the wardrobe, but also the necessary protection for the eyes from ultraviolet rays. Svetlana Mirgorodskaya, ophthalmologist, microsurgeon at SM Clinic, Candidate of Medical Sciences, told Izvestia on July 22 about the consequences of ignoring their use in sunny weather and choosing suitable ones.

"UV rays are electromagnetic radiation of the invisible spectrum with a wavelength of 100-400 nm. There are three types of rays: A, B and C. And each of them poses a danger to the eyes," she said.

The expert explained that type A UV rays can cause cataracts and retinal damage, including burns and macular degeneration. Category B rays affect the surface of the eye, leading to burns of the cornea and conjunctiva, and can also cause pterygium and keratoconus. Type C UV rays are blocked by the ozone layer.

According to Mirgorodskaya, for reliable protection, glasses must be equipped with a UV filter, which is indicated by a UV label indicating the blocking level (350-400 nm). You should also pay attention to the degree of dimming, designated as cat., where four is the maximum dimming for highlands, and two is for urban conditions.

"The third function, although not mandatory, is polarization, that is, the absorption of light rays that are reflected from horizontal surfaces. This filter protects the eyes from the bright glare of shop windows, the surface of the water at sea, wet asphalt and bright snow," the specialist added.

The doctor emphasized the importance of using sunglasses on sunny days, reminding that it is not only a fashion accessory, but also eye protection.

On June 27, Anna Solovey, ophthalmologist at the 3Z clinic in Moscow, told how to maintain eye health during rest. According to her, one should not forget about chemical risks. Chlorinated water in swimming pools can cause irritation and break the protective tear film, which increases the likelihood of infection.
