Russians were warned about scammers masquerading as employees of marketplaces
The scammers began calling Russians on behalf of alleged employees of marketplaces and courier services, after which they notify them of a parcel ready for delivery and paid for. This was announced on July 21 by Andrey Biychuk, director of the Defender product at MTS.
"The victim receives a call ostensibly on behalf of a well-known marketplace or delivery service and is informed about a package ready for delivery. The attackers claim that the order has already been paid, it is only necessary to agree on a convenient time to receive it," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to him, in a conversation, the scammers offer to verify their identity and send a code via SMS notification. Biychuk clarifies that fraudsters actually use this code to log into their personal account or for banking operations.
In addition, the attackers can also claim that without a quick confirmation, the parcel can be disposed of, and the money for it will not be refunded.
On July 19, the UBK of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia reported that a person who was deceived by fraudsters and gave them his personal data has a "golden hour" to minimize the consequences. It was clarified that the following steps should be taken: promptly change the password, access code to the banking service; freeze bank cards and accounts; promptly contact the bank at the number indicated on the bank card or the official website.
