- Basketball player Kasatkin, who was detained in France, refused to be extradited to the United States
Basketball player Daniil Kasatkin, who was detained in France on suspicion of cyberbullying, said in court that he did not know what he was accused of and refused extradition. This was announced to Izvestia on July 20 by the athlete's lawyer, Frederic Belo.
"The prison, as I was told, is 200 years old. I will not go into the details of her work. I can only say that it is incredibly difficult to solve any problem here, especially without knowing French. I hope that soon Anna (the basketball player's girlfriend — Ed.) will be able to give me a French textbook. I want to understand what I'm being told and be able to solve basic tasks here," the lawyer quotes Kasatkin from the letter.
According to Belo, the basketball player has not yet gained access to the gym, so he studies in his cell — it is forbidden to enter the sports field. He managed to get books in Russian, pens and notebooks.
"At the time of my arrest, my agent was negotiating with various clubs, and I was supposed to sign a contract for next season in the near future. Now my whole career is in question. I do not know if I will be released in two months, six months, a year or more," the athlete added.
The newspaper Le Monde reported on July 9 that Kasatkin was detained at the request of the United States in France. He was suspected of being a member of a hacker network that operated with the help of ransomware programs.
Later, on July 10, the Russian Embassy in France requested consular access to the basketball player, but it was not provided due to the position of the authorities. On July 16, the Russian Embassy in Paris received permission from France for consular access to the detainee.
