Iran threatened to withdraw from the NPT and increase the level of uranium enrichment
Iran may withdraw from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and begin enriching uranium above 60% in the event of increased sanctions pressure. This was stated on July 19 by the representative of the Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy of the Mejlis, Ebrahim Rezai.
According to the deputy, Tehran voluntarily suspended the implementation of the additional protocol on cooperation with the IAEA, but retains membership in the NPT. Rezaei warned Britain, France and Germany that resorting to the mechanism for the return of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) would have consequences.
"Pressure will force Iran to consider withdrawing from the treaty, enriching uranium above 60%, producing and exporting modern centrifuges, and expanding nuclear cooperation," he stressed in an interview with Tasnim news agency.
Rezaei added that launching a refund mechanism would not drastically change the situation with sanctions, as Iran was already living under strict restrictions.
The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said on July 16 that Iran could inflict a stronger blow on the United States and other countries than during the conflict with Israel. According to him, Iran is capable of delivering an "even more painful blow" to the United States and other countries than the one committed against the American military base in the Qatar region of Al-Udeid.
