Former President of the Republic of Korea Yoon Seok-yeol, who is in custody after attempting to declare martial law, has been charged with new charges. This was reported on Saturday, July 19, by the Reuters news agency, citing a statement from the prosecutor's office.

"The new charges include obstructing the exercise of the rights of others through abuse of power, ordering the deletion of records and blocking the execution of arrest warrants," the material says.

Yun's lawyers said the ex-president denies the charges. On July 18, the Seoul Central District Court rejected Yoon's request to have his arrest lifted and remanded him in custody. On April 4, the Constitutional Court of South Korea approved the impeachment of President Yoon Seok-young and dismissed him from office.

Early presidential elections in South Korea were held on June 3. Lee Jae—myung, a candidate from the Democratic party Turbo, won 49.42% of the vote, while his opponent, Kim Moon-soo, a candidate from the conservative party People's Power, won 41.15%.

The situation in South Korea escalated on December 3, 2024, after the president declared martial law, which was caused by the threat of paralysis of power due to attempts to conduct impeachment proceedings. The commander of the emergency regime, Chief of Staff of the Army Pak Ahn Su noted that until the lifting of martial law, the activities of Parliament, political parties and associations are prohibited.

Later, on May 1 of this year, Younhap reported that the former president of South Korea and a person involved in the criminal proceedings in the rebellion case, Yoon Seok-yeol, was charged with abuse of power. At the same time, the agency noted that there was no physical detention of the ex-president.
