Many people start running, hoping to lose weight, but often face the opposite effect — gaining pounds. XFIT expert Yulia Gulyaeva explained on July 20 in an interview with Izvestia why this is happening.

According to her, the main reason lies in the balance of calories: to lose weight, you need to spend more than you consume. Running does burn 400-700 calories per hour, but physical activity can increase appetite. After a workout, people often eat more than they have spent, which leads to an excess of calories.

"The second point is to pay attention to what you quench your thirst with. During any cardio workout, we actively sweat, and it's only natural that we feel thirsty. Sweet water and juices are very high in calories, but they do not quench thirst," Gulyaeva stressed.

In addition, lack of sleep and overtraining increase cortisol levels, which makes it more difficult to burn fat. For effective weight loss, a balance between exercise and rest is important.

The expert stated that for weight loss, it does not matter what type of physical activity a person chooses, provided that energy consumption is equal. However, running does not contribute to maintaining muscle mass, which is critical for metabolism. Therefore, it is recommended to combine it with strength and interval training.

Earlier, on June 28, endocrinologist and Doctor of Medical Sciences Maria Matveeva warned about the dangers of weight loss drugs. According to the doctor, there are drugs whose side effect affects the digestive system, and some of them negatively affect brain function.
