Hungary has ruled out supporting the EU's draft budget to help Ukraine
Hungary does not support the draft budget of the European Union (EU) for 2028-2034, 25% of which is planned to be provided to Ukraine. This was announced to journalists on July 16 by the head of the administration of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Gergei Guyash, during a briefing.
He called the project pro-Ukrainian and stressed that Budapest could not support it in its current form. It is noted that 25% of the total budget is provided for Ukraine — 190 billion euros.
"They are taking money from farmers and cohesion policies and sending it to Ukraine. Anyone who supports this puts Ukraine above Hungary," Guyash is quoted as saying About Hungary.
According to him, the government expressed full solidarity with local farmers who are protesting against the cuts. In particular, he stressed that the draft budget could not even serve as a basis for negotiations.
He clarified that the European Commission (EC) is also seeking to expand the EU bureaucracy by hiring 2.5 thousand new employees and increasing their salaries. Guyash noted that the Hungarian government considers these steps unjustified.
Hungary called on all political figures to reject the EC's proposal and confirm their support for a holistic agricultural policy, which, according to the head of the Orban administration, benefits all EU citizens.
Earlier in the day, Orban called the people of Europe the biggest losers from the draft seven-year EU budget. According to him, citizens, including farmers, may find themselves in a very difficult situation. In addition, the Prime Minister stressed that the situation could lead to a decrease in support for both Hungarian and European farmers.
