Endangered bird spotted in New Zealand for the first time in 50 years
An endangered small spotted kiwi has been spotted in New Zealand for the first time in 50 years. This was announced on July 16 by The New Zealand Herald newspaper.
"The small spotted kiwi, or kiwi pukupuku, was first spotted in the remote Adams Conservation Area on the West Coast by a hunter from the Department of Conservation," the publication says.
It is specified that this species has not been found for 50 years. According to scientists, at the moment there are about 2 thousand of these birds left in the world.
"Despite years of searching, the last known sighting of the kiwi pukupuku on the mainland occurred in 1978," the newspaper noted.
The bird, listed in the Red Book of Russia, was welcomed in the Pskov region on April 22. A photo of the white-tailed eagle was taken in the Polistovsky Nature Reserve.
