In summer, metallurgists and all those whose work is somehow related to the field of metallurgy celebrate their professional holiday. Every year, celebrations are held on a large scale in large cities with industrial enterprises. Izvestia tells us when the celebrations will take place in 2025 and how to congratulate metallurgists on the occasion.

When is Metallurgist's Day in 2025

Metallurgist's Day in Russia is traditionally celebrated on the third Sunday of July. This tradition was established back in Soviet times and has continued into our days. In 2025, the holiday falls on July 20th.

On the same day, celebrations will be held in the cities of Belarus, Kazakhstan and some other CIS countries, where metallurgical plants are located, as well as educational institutions that train specialists in this field.

The history of Metallurgist's Day

Peter I's reforms gave an impetus to the development of Russian metallurgy. By the middle of the 18th century, our country had become the world's leading iron smelter, and the profession of metallurgist took pride of place among other working professions.

Today, metallurgy is one of the key industries that generates about 5-6% of GDP. It extends to ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, providing raw materials and necessary materials for mechanical engineering, construction, the fuel and energy complex and many other important sectors of the economy.

Ferrous metallurgy is engaged in the production of cast iron, steel, rolled products and ferroalloys based on iron ore; non—ferrous metallurgy is engaged in the extraction, processing of non-ferrous metal ores and smelting of non-ferrous metals and their alloys.

Thus, the profession of a metallurgist includes not one, but a whole range of specialties, which includes both working and engineering positions.

In recognition of the metallurgists' achievements, a professional holiday was created in their honor in 1957. It is fixed by a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Metallurgist's Day did not disappear and acquired new traditions.

Events for Metallurgist's Day on July 20

The holiday honors employees and veterans of the industry. Festive concerts, various sports and family events are organized for them. In a solemn ceremony, the best are awarded the honorary title of "Honored Metallurgist of the Russian Federation" and a badge.

Metallurgist's Day is celebrated on a special scale in Magnitogorsk, Chelyabinsk, Cherepovets, Verkhnyaya Pyshma, Novokuznetsk, Nizhny Tagil and other industrial centers, most of which have city-forming metallurgical enterprises. Therefore, the holiday is often combined with the City Day.

By tradition, the launch of new enterprises is also timed to coincide with the holiday. So, last year, three production facilities were launched at once in the Chelyabinsk, Nizhny Novgorod regions and the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR). The launch ceremony was attended by President Vladimir Putin via video link.
