During the year, the capital's doctors performed 18 operations to implant a subcutaneous cardioverter defibrillator in patients with dangerous forms of arrhythmia or tachycardia. This was stated by Anastasia Rakova, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Social Development.

The device monitors the occurrence of abnormal heart rate, can restore the rhythm or automatically perform defibrillation if necessary. A cardioverter defibrillator is installed under the latissimus dorsi muscle in the axillary region, and an electrode is placed subcutaneously on the anterior chest wall and installed in the projection of the heart. According to the deputy mayor, the operation is low-traumatic and takes no more than an hour and a half.

"This is one of the most effective tools for preventing sudden death caused by heart disorders," said Rakova.

Operations began to be performed free of charge in Moscow clinics a year ago as part of the development of high-tech medical care, the availability of which is "steadily growing due to the constant updating of equipment, the introduction of the most modern and innovative diagnostic and treatment technologies," as noted by the deputy mayor. Thus, over the past three years, more than 5,000 units of various equipment have been purchased for the cardiology service of the capital's hospitals and polyclinics.

For the first time, the subcutaneous cardioverter defibrillator system was installed in a patient by doctors of the V.V. Veresaev Hospital. Today, such interventions are carried out at the S.S. Yudin State Clinical Hospital, the V.V. Veresaev State Clinical Hospital and the I.V. Davydovsky State Clinical Hospital.
