Italian Prime Minister Meloni warned the West against a trade war
A possible trade war between Western countries would put these countries in a vulnerable position. This was announced on July 13 by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
"Today, the government is once again in close contact with the European Commission and all parties involved in tariff negotiations. The trade war in the West will weaken us all in the face of global challenges that we are solving together," the Italian government's press service quoted her as saying.
Meloni stressed that European countries have the "economic and financial strength" necessary to defend their own interests and reach a reasonable agreement on tariffs. Italy is also ready to contribute to this, the politician added.
On July 12, US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose 30 percent duties on exports from the European Union (EU) from August 1, 2025.
Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto blamed the introduction of tariffs on the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. In turn, von der Leyen and the head of the European Parliament's International Trade committee, Bernd Lange, threatened the United States with countermeasures if duties were imposed against the EU.
