France warned of the devastating impact of Trump's tariffs
French cheese and wine producers have warned of the potentially devastating impact of 30 percent tariffs on imports from the European Union, which U.S. President Donald Trump is threatening to impose on August 1. This is reported by the Reuters news agency.
"This is a real shock for milk and cheese producers; this is an important market for us," Francois—Xavier Ward, CEO of FNIL Dairy Association, said in an interview with the agency.
He noted that the industry may have to rethink its strategy regarding the markets in which companies operate.
"This is a new reality that we will have to get used to. I don't think it's temporary," Ward said.
According to Jean-Francois Loiseau, president of the ANIA food lobby group, 30 percent tariffs would be a "disaster" for the French food industry.
France's dairy sector exports almost half of its products, mainly cheeses such as brie, as well as fresh products such as yogurt and butter.
According to Ward, the sector risks losing hundreds of millions of euros. France annually supplies the United States with dairy products worth 350 million euros, he noted.
French food exporters are concerned that additional import duties could lead to higher prices for their products.
Earlier, on July 12, Trump announced plans to impose 30 percent duties on exports from the European Union from August 1, 2025.
Bloomberg reported on June 25 that EU countries are preparing to take retaliatory measures if the United States imposes duties on goods from Europe. In addition, officials from the association expect that the United States will maintain some duties even after the end of trade negotiations. They are currently preparing a retaliatory list of tariffs on €95 billion worth of American goods.
