US President Donald Trump positively assesses the increase in targeted defense spending by NATO countries to 5% of gross domestic product (GDP). He made the corresponding statement on July 12.
"You saw, I solved the NATO problem last week. And now each country pays significantly more, for example, from 2% to 5%," he said.
According to him, as a result, the military bloc began to receive more than $1 trillion.
Trump said that the United States is also "doing well" in the field of trade. The American leader expressed confidence that things would go "very productively."
The NATO Summit was held in The Hague on June 24-25. Following the meeting, the countries agreed to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP.
After that, on June 26, the heads of the EU member states confirmed the goal of achieving the ability to autonomously solve defense and security tasks in five years by adopting an appropriate document. They also noted the importance of joint projects aimed at improving the defense capabilities of the EU countries.
