The doctor dispelled the myth about the connection of IVF with the development of cancer in women

There is a myth in society that in vitro fertilization (IVF) is closely linked to the risk of cancer in women. About why IVF and the risk of cancer are in no way interrelated, July 12, Gazeta.Ru" was told by Ilya Volodyaev, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Senior Researcher at the Department of Embryology, Faculty of Biology, Lomonosov Moscow State University, embryologist at the European Medical Center (EMC).

The doctor noted that, according to public opinion, women are afraid of breast cancer. This is due to the deliberate stimulation of the ovaries, which produce estrogen and other necessary hormones. It is the consequences of taking hormonal drugs that frighten women, especially between the ages of 25 and 60, when the risk of ovarian cancer is quite high.

"Women come for IVF in the age range from 25 to 45 years. And it happens that a woman undergoes an IVF procedure, being healthy, and after a certain time the disease is diagnosed," Volodyaev explained.

However, the embryologist noted that, according to many studies, breast cancer is equal both in women who have done IVF and in those who have not performed such a procedure.

"The absence of additional risk associated with IVF procedures in relation to cancer, both breast and other localizations, has been confirmed by dozens of studies, including a large meta—analysis of 2021 with thousands of participants and clear conclusions," the embryologist emphasized.

Earlier, on July 9, Olga Lavrinovich, oncogynecologist and reproductologist, medical consultant to the Khabensky Foundation, spoke about the most common types of cancer during pregnancy. The most common cancers among pregnant women include breast, cervical, and ovarian cancers.
