On July 8, police officers detained football referee Bogdan Golovko for illegally influencing the results of the Russian Football Championship. This was reported by RBC on June 9, citing sources.

According to the investigation, Golovko intentionally made mistakes several times in favor of the Moscow football club (FC) Torpedo during the match against FC Kamaz (Naberezhnye Chelny) on May 24. The result of the match decided which FC's would enter the Russian Premier League.

"In the Torpedo—Kamaz match, Referee Golovko twice made controversial decisions not to award penalties to the Muscovites. Both of these episodes were reviewed by the RFU presidential expert judging panel in early June. <...> In the second episode, the panel concluded that Golovko had not awarded a penalty <...> by mistake," RBC reported.

Due to erroneous refereeing, the results of the game will be annulled, and the result of the Russian Championship (CR) will be reviewed.

Golovko is charged under Article 184 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Unlawfully influencing the outcome of an official sports competition"), and faces up to seven years in prison.

Earlier, on June 20, law enforcement officers detained Leonid Sobolev, the owner of FC Torpedo. On the same day, it was reported that a criminal case had been opened against him, as well as the director of Torpedo Skorodumov, who, according to preliminary data, tried to bribe the judge. It was noted that the defendants allegedly offered the chief referee over 1 million rubles for winning the match, awarding penalties to opponents or removing their player.
