Monument to diplomat Vitaly Churkin erected in Republika Srpska
In the municipality of East Sarajevo of Republika Srpska (an entity within Bosnia and Herzegovina) A monument to the Russian diplomat Vitaly Churkin was unveiled. This was reported by the press service of the Social Democratic Party (SNSD).
The monument was erected as a sign of gratitude for the activities of the diplomat, who in 2015, while serving as the Russian permanent representative to the United Nations, vetoed the British resolution on Srebrenica, calling the events of 1995 "genocide."
"Churkin defended the Serbs not because he was forced to, but because he knew that justice was on our side," Milorad Dodik, President of Republika Srpska, is quoted as saying on the party's Facebook page (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
According to Srdjan Amidjic, the representative of the President of Republika Srpska, the monument symbolizes not only friendship between Russians and Serbs, but also their common values.
"This friendship is based not only on cultural and religious ties, but also on universal principles of justice, which are cherished by both our peoples," Amidzic said.
As noted by "Gazeta.Ru", the bust was installed on the site of a commemorative plaque, to which the country's diplomatic mission annually lays wreaths on Diplomat's Day.
Earlier, on June 15, Dodik announced that he was striving to maintain and develop partnership relations with Russia, despite "difficult circumstances." He stressed that the Russian Federation, in the face of sanctions from the West, has found a way to strengthen its economy, and Europe, in turn, has lost its competitiveness.
