The doctor called the products harmful in the heat
In summer, to maintain health and well-being, it is important to maintain a water balance and a proper approach to nutrition. Anastasia Agaeva, a general practitioner at the Sberbank Health medical company, told Izvestia on July 9 which foods should be avoided in the heat and which should be included in the diet.
"During the heat, it is recommended to avoid eating heavy foods — fatty and fried. Such dishes create an additional burden on the gastrointestinal tract, forcing the body to spend energy on digestion, whereas it must regulate body temperature to reduce the risk of overheating," she said.
It is also recommended to reduce the intake of spicy dishes, as they can provoke excessive secretion of sweat, increasing the risk of dehydration. The same should be done with salted, smoked and canned foods — they retain fluid in the body, which can lead to swelling and increased blood pressure.
"Sugary carbonated drinks and desserts with fatty creams should also be avoided, as they can not only dramatically increase blood sugar levels, contribute to weight gain, but also provoke dehydration and lead to fatigue," the specialist explained.
Also, according to Agayeva, it is recommended to limit the consumption of caffeinated beverages, including black tea, to two cups a day, as they have a diuretic effect, which can also lead to a lack of body fluids. It is important to give up alcohol, including because of the negative effects on the body's ability to adapt to high air temperatures.
In summer, preference should be given to light and fresh foods: berries, fruits, vegetables, herbs, soft drinks without sugar, low-fat meats and fish. Such a diet has a beneficial effect on the digestive processes, fills the body with essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements.
When choosing summer fruits and greens, it is necessary to take into account their maturity and quality. Local seasonal products should also be preferred. To keep them fresh, it is recommended to store them properly — at a low temperature and away from sunlight.
"To maintain health, it is extremely important to maintain a water balance — drink about 1.5–2 liters of liquid per day in small portions throughout the day. Preference should be given to regular drinking water. For a change, you can drink, for example, mineral water, herbal teas, homemade sugar—free drinks with lemon and mint, kefir," she summed up.
The doctor noted that there are categories of patients who should limit their fluid intake and discuss individual rates with their doctor face-to-face or online using telemedicine services. Among them are people with kidney, heart and vascular diseases, arterial hypertension, as well as pregnant women.
On June 27, Svetlana Burnatskaya, a general practitioner and occupational therapist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), spoke about proper nutrition in the heat. So, according to the doctor, salads with a little protein can be an ideal option for summer: eggs, fish, seafood or chicken.
