The geneticist spoke about the genes that affect a beautiful tan
People react differently to the sun's rays. While some people get sunburns, others get an even tan on their skin. About how the genetic code affects the perception of the sun and the evenness of tanning, July 8, Gazeta.Ru" was told by a leading researcher and chairman of the expert Council of the National Center for Genetic Research (MyGenetics) Irina Kolesnikova.
The color of the skin, eyes and hair, according to the expert, is determined by the amount of melanin, a dark pigment produced by the skin to protect against ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
"There are two main types of melanin: eumelanin and pheomelanin. <...> The ratio of these pigments determines the individual characteristics of skin and hair pigmentation," says Kolesnikova.
The TYR and ASIP genes are responsible for the balance of these types of melanin and, consequently, for the evenness of the tan.
The TYR gene is responsible for the perception of UV rays and pigmentation of the skin, while ASIP is responsible for the distribution of melanin throughout it. It is how and in what amount these genes secrete proteins that affects the saturation of the tan and its evenness.
Earlier, on July 19, 2024, Polina Razheva, a dermatologist at the Sberbank Health medical company, spoke about first aid for sunburn. The treatment of burns, according to the doctor, is dictated by the severity of the skin lesion.
