Starting from August 1, the United States will impose duties of 25% on all goods of Korean and Japanese origin imported into the country. This was announced on July 7 by the American leader Donald Trump on the Truth Social network.

According to him, the United States is ready to continue trade with Korea and Japan, but intends to achieve a more balanced relationship. He clarified that the new tariffs should compensate for the long-term trade deficit caused by the tariff and other policies of these countries.

In the letter, he stressed that duties would apply to all goods separately from industry tariffs, and attempts to circumvent the new measures would lead to additional payments.

"As you know, there will be no tariff if <... companies in your country will decide to manufacture products in the United States," Trump added.

He also warned that the new measures are aimed at eliminating the trade imbalance, which, according to him, threatens the US economy and national security. According to him, Washington is ready to adjust the amount of duties depending on the position of Seoul and Tokyo on the opening of their markets.

On July 4, Trump announced that Washington would send letters to foreign countries related to the amount of new duties from August 1. According to him, they will vary in cost from 60% or 70% to 10 and 20%.
