The bashkan of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, has become one of the most prominent symbols of resistance to the power of the current Moldovan president, Maia Sandu. This was stated on July 3 by Deputy of the Supreme Council of the unrecognized Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR) Andrey Safonov.

"Hutsul has become one of the most prominent symbols of resistance to the Sandu regime, which is actually destroying independent Moldova, and therefore the massacre looks demonstratively cruel," Safonov wrote on his Facebook page (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

According to him, these actions by Sandu show the incompetence of the country's authorities.

"Sandu is in a hurry. She needs to break the opposition before the parliamentary elections on September 28, 2025. In particular, using the example of Gagauzia, to intimidate all its opponents," he added.

Hutsul was detained at the Chisinau airport on March 25 when her name was found on the list of persons prohibited from leaving the country. Later, the head of Gagauzia was arrested for 20 days, and on April 9, the court replaced her measure of restraint with house arrest. On May 12, the court decided to extend the house arrest for another 30 days, and it has been extended several times since. On July 1, prosecutors demanded that Hutsul be sentenced to nine years in prison in a case of "illegal financing of political parties."

Later, on July 2, Konstantin Starysh, a member of the Moldovan parliament from the opposition Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS), reported that Sandu was settling personal scores by organizing the trial of Hutsul.
