Opposition rallies with the participation of students began in Belgrade
Opposition demonstrations with the participation of students began in Belgrade on the Vidovdan holiday, the day of remembrance of heroes and national identity of Serbia. The footage is published by Izvestia on June 28.
Earlier in the day, the President of the Republic, Alexander Vucic, announced the violence allegedly planned by the protesters. Police officers are on duty near the Serbian Parliament building and the Presidential Palace.
"Impatient protesting students and supportive retired grandmothers decided to occupy Slavia Square. This is one of the central intersections of Belgrade," said Izvestia correspondent Sergey Petrov.
According to Silvana Petrovic, a participant in the protest action, the Serbian people can no longer "see or hear the one who stands at the head of power." She added that Vucic's words about the alleged impending violence during the rally are "manipulation and lies."
Anti-government opposition protests began in Serbia after the events of November 2024, when 15 people died as a result of the collapse of the canopy of the railway station in Novi Sad. Shortly after the tragedy, Prime Minister Milos Vucevic and several other politicians resigned.
On June 28 of this year, Vucic said that the Serbian government is ready to ensure order in Belgrade, where acts of violence by protesters are possible. In addition, the Serbian leader stressed that the state would do everything to show restraint and patience, and also appealed to the organizers of the protest and urged them not to disrupt public order.
