Trump expressed confidence in Putin's desire to achieve peace in Ukraine
American leader Donald Trump said he had no doubt about Russian President Vladimir Putin's desire to achieve a settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. This was announced by the politician to journalists on June 25 following the results of the NATO summit in The Hague.
"I know one thing — he (Putin — Ed.) would like to come to an agreement and get out of this story (the conflict in Ukraine — Ed.)," Trump said at a press conference broadcast by CNN.
Trump added that the Russian leader had recently offered mediation assistance in resolving the conflict in the Middle East. The US president announced an upcoming telephone conversation with Putin, without specifying the timing.
In addition, the American leader stressed that he had not discussed the possibility of a ceasefire with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, and added that the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict had proved difficult.
"It turned out to be more difficult than it was thought," Trump clarified.
According to him, communication with the Ukrainian leader also turned out to be more difficult and caused a number of problems.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted on June 23 that a summit meeting between Putin and Trump could take place after the results of the negotiations. According to Peskov, Russia's position on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine is consistent and well-known. It is also set out in the draft memorandum, which was submitted to the Ukrainian side.
