Slovakia threatened the EU to block sanctions for abandoning energy resources of the Russian Federation

Slovakia will block the adoption of new anti-Russian sanctions if the European Commission (EC) promotes the abandonment of energy resources from the Russian Federation. This was announced to journalists on June 24 by the Prime Minister of the Republic Robert Fico.

He clarified that Bratislava had asked to postpone the vote on sanctions until the issue of the EC's plan to reduce the dependence of the European Union (EU) on Russian energy resources is resolved. According to him, this plan harms the entire block.

"If [they] decide not to listen to us and will at any cost carry out REPoweing (implementation of the EC plan. — Ed.), they will go before legislative changes and this will be done by a qualified majority, we will block the sanctions," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

Energy waste: The European Parliament will consider the rejection of gas from the Russian Federation at the end of June.

These measures will affect the industry in Slovakia and Hungary.

The day before, Hungary and Slovakia blocked the adoption of the 18th package of sanctions against Russia. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that the country will not pay the price for supporting Ukraine.
