Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) can develop almost imperceptibly, masquerading as ordinary fatigue. Oksana Serebryakova, a general practitioner at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg clinic), PhD, told Izvestia about this on June 20.

According to the specialist, in the early stages, the disease manifests itself with nonspecific symptoms: weakness, pale skin, shortness of breath during exertion and rapid heartbeat. Heavy menstruation is an alarming signal for women, and cognitive decline in the elderly.

"Anemia is sometimes the first sign of serious pathologies, including oncological diseases," Serebryakova emphasized.

The doctor named an unbalanced diet with a deficiency of meat, greens and vitamin C, as well as excessive consumption of tea and coffee, which interfere with the absorption of iron, as the main reasons for waiting. Women of reproductive age and the elderly are at particular risk.

"Iron deficiency without timely treatment leads to disruption of the cardiovascular system, weakening of the immune system and slowing down the recovery processes in the body," explained the therapist.

For diagnosis, it is necessary to take blood tests, including a study of ferritin levels. Treatment includes individually selected iron supplements and nutritional adjustments. According to the doctor, folk methods like pomegranate juice can only be an addition to the main therapy, but they will not replace it.

As a preventive measure, Serebryakova recommends regularly consuming foods rich in iron: red meat, liver, legumes, and green vegetables. It is important to combine them with vitamin C for better absorption and limit the consumption of tea and coffee during meals.

"If alarming symptoms appear, you should not postpone a visit to the doctor: early diagnosis allows you to avoid serious complications," the expert concluded.

On May 30, Tamila Agayeva, an endocrinologist at the Semeynaya clinic network, told Izvestia about the symptoms and treatment of hypothyroidism. Endocrine disease may not manifest itself for a long time. Usually, patients may complain of fatigue, drowsiness, weight gain, hair loss, and decreased mood.
