- The political scientist predicted a deterioration of the situation in Los Angeles due to the Trump administration
The situation in Los Angeles may worsen if the administration of US President Donald Trump continues to apply harsh measures to suppress protests. This was stated on June 10 by American political scientist Malek Dudakov in an interview with Izvestia.
"In fact, you need to understand that even though the current riots in Los Angeles are quite large-scale, yes, but in scope it does not reach the level of the BLM pogroms of 2020. Moreover, at that time they were nationwide in nature and took place in many American megacities at once," the expert explained.
According to him, the main difference between the current situation is the rapid response of the Trump administration, which does not delay the deployment of troops to suppress the protests. Dudakov noted that the president seeks to prevent further escalation and limit the unrest only to California.
As for the possibility of negotiations with the protesters, he expressed doubts. According to the expert, the reaction of the federal authorities will only get tougher.
Local authorities and Democrats, in turn, prefer to distance themselves from the conflict, criticizing Trump's actions and trying to extract political benefits from the situation, he said.
"We know that, for example, California Governor Gavin Newsom has obvious presidential ambitions there, and he would like to run for president in the 28th year. Well, but this situation can also have a strong reputational impact on them <...>. But for now they are trying to put all the responsibility on Trump, while Trump, on the contrary, is tightening the screws so that, in general, the summer of pogroms will not be allowed again, as it was in 2020," Dudakov stressed.
Mass protests in California began after a police raid to identify illegal migrants, during which 45 people were detained. On June 8, Trump ordered the National Guard to be sent to the state to stop the riots, which was condemned by the governors of 22 states, regarding it as an "abuse of power."
Izvestia correspondent Nikolai Masters reported on June 10 that protesters began throwing fireworks at police officers, as well as committing acts of robbery and breaking into establishments. Law enforcement officers, in turn, actively use tear gas against demonstrators.
