In the current conditions, the restart of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is impractical. This was announced on June 9 by the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, in a speech to the members of the Board of Governors.

According to him, the nuclear safety situation at the power plant remains unstable, therefore, in the context of the conflict in Ukraine, it is not worth restarting the nuclear power plant. Grossi stressed that six reactor units have now been completely shut down.

"According to the Agency's recommendations, no reactor should be restarted as long as the <conflict> continues to endanger the nuclear safety and security of the nuclear power plant," the IAEA's press service quoted the Director General as saying, a statement published on their official website.

Grossi clarified that strikes by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) remain the main threat to nuclear safety. He noted that a similar situation had already occurred in February, and then it led to damage to the nuclear power plant and the subsequent fire on it.

On June 6, the head of Rosatom, Alexei Likhachev, announced after a meeting with Grossi in Kaliningrad that the state corporation was preparing to restart the nuclear power plant. At the same time, Likhachev clarified that this initiative can be implemented only if the military threat, direct attacks, and sabotage actions against the station are lifted, aimed at disrupting safe and stable operation.

On May 15, Grossi reported that IAEA inspectors had heard explosions near the nuclear power plant every day for a week. According to him, cooperation with Russia and Ukraine is currently continuing in order to organize the next rotation of IAEA experts at the plant, which was postponed due to the complication of the situation at the nuclear power plant.
