Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed to establish a new holiday in the country — the Day of Languages of the Peoples of Russia on September 8. The Head of state made the relevant initiative on June 5 at a meeting of the Council for the implementation of state policy in the field of support for the Russian language and the languages of the country's peoples.

"I propose to establish the day of languages of the peoples of Russia. And it should be celebrated annually on September 8, the birthday of the poet Rasul Gamzatov," the president said.

He stressed that Gamzatov created his works in the Avar language, and their wide recognition was made possible by their translation into Russian.

On the same day, Putin also supported the proposal to create a center for the promotion of the Russian language in the world on the basis of one of the universities. He said he would ask colleagues from the presidential administration and the government of the Russian Federation to work on the project and support it.
