- The Russian Ambassador to Moldova named the conditions for the withdrawal of peacekeepers from Transnistria
The withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from Transnistria is possible with progress in negotiations to resolve the conflict in the region. This was announced on May 27 by Russian Ambassador to Moldova Oleg Ozerov.
"The issue of the withdrawal of the Russian contingent has already been discussed before. Moreover, the Russian side has never said that it will not be withdrawn. The Russian side says that this should be done as part of the progress of the Transnistrian settlement itself," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
The Ambassador also recalled the "5+2" format that had developed during the entire settlement period, based on the 1992 agreement. According to this document, the Russian Federation acts as a mediator, as well as a guarantor of the conflict settlement.
Ozerov noted that the presence of Russian peacekeeping forces guarantees the prevention of a resumption of hostilities, as well as monitoring and compliance with the truce reached in 1992. He stressed that it was the Russian contingent that stopped the military clash in the same year.
"It is necessary to fully restore the negotiation process and ensure the conditions for the settlement of relations between the left and right banks, between Transnistria and official Chisinau," the Russian ambassador added.
On April 16, deputy of the Supreme Council of Pridnestrovie Andrei Safonov accused Moldovan President Maya Sandu and her ruling Action and Solidarity (PAS) party of intending to bring the country into conflict. According to him, since 2025, the current government has "finally dropped the mask." He also drew attention to the Moldovan authorities' policy of severing ties with Russia.
