The Russian Foreign Ministry demanded that Sweden comply with the Vienna Convention after the attack on the embassy

Russia insists that Sweden fulfill its obligations under the Vienna Convention against the background of the drone attack on the Russian Embassy in Stockholm. This was announced on May 26 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"We insist on the strict fulfillment by the Swedish authorities of the obligations of the host country in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 regarding ensuring the physical security and inviolability of the Russian foreign mission," the diplomat said, her words are quoted on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to Zakharova, the recent drone attack was the fifteenth since May 2024.

"That is, such lawlessness, with the obvious connivance, and possibly with the direct sanction of the Swedish authorities, occurs monthly, or even more often," Zakharova said.

She added that the fact that the Swedish police have not yet identified or prosecuted any of those involved in the raids also looks egregious. The representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that Moscow has the right to wonder whether Stockholm is really interested in an objective and effective investigation of what is happening.

According to Zakharova, the current situation suggests that in Sweden the positions of those who seek to increase tension in relations with Russia are strengthening, sabotaging diplomatic agreements and, apparently, purposefully damaging Russian diplomatic property and its employees.

Zakharova told Izvestia on May 25 that Sweden would receive a protest note from the Russian Federation after dumping a container of paint using a drone at the Russian embassy. She stressed that Stockholm needs to clearly fulfill its obligations under the Vienna Convention. On the same day, the Russian embassy reported that, having flown over the territory of the diplomatic mission, a drone dropped a container of paint on the site in front of the main entrance.
