- FC Krasnodar players and fans celebrated their victory in the Russian Championship
Fans of the Krasnodar football club celebrated their team's victory in the Russian Championship. Tens of thousands of residents gathered in the streets and squares of the city to celebrate a historic moment for the entire Russian sport. Footage from the scene on May 25 is shown by Izvestia.
Having beaten Dynamo Moscow 3-0, the Krasnodar team set the crowded stadium on its ears three times. After the match, the celebration moved to the streets of the city.
Football player Fyodor Smolov, who returned to Krasnodar, was a member of Dynamo a year ago. Alexander Ovechkin, a player of the National Hockey League (NHL), Washington Capitals forward, congratulated him on his victory in the match of the 30th round of the Russian Premier League (RPL) and the first championship in his career.
Following the results of the championship, goalkeeper Stanislav Agkatsev conveyed parting words for the French Cup final to former PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov, and midfielder Nikita Krivtsov left the stadium on the roof of his SUV to the enthusiastic cheers of the crowd.
FC Krasnodar was founded by businessman Sergey Galitsky 17 years ago. He has invested a lot in the development of the region's sports infrastructure.
"This team was led by an amazing man, the president of this club is Galitsky. Honor him and praise him. And to all Krasnodar residents. Congratulations!" said Honored Coach of the RSFSR Yuri Semin.
Zenit St. Petersburg, in turn, defeated FC Akhmat 3-0, but still remained on the second line — one point was missing.
"There are no emotions. It's a shame for everyone, but we need to accept defeat with dignity, so congratulations to Krasnodar," said Zenit defender Yuri Gorshkov.
The day before, Krasnodar football club beat Dynamo Moscow 3-0 in the match of the 30th round of the Russian Premier League and became the Russian football champion for the first time in history. Krasnodar scored 67 points and took the first place, ahead of Zenit, which was the winner of the RPL of the previous six seasons.
