- The media reported on the blocking of the X social network in Tanzania due to a fake about the death of the president
The Tanzanian authorities have introduced a nationwide blocking of the social network X (ex. Twitter) after the hacking of the police account, where a false message was posted about the death of the country's president Samia Suluhu Hassan. This was announced on May 21 by the Kenyan portal Tuko.
"The ban was introduced after a high—profile cyberattack, as a result of which the official account of the Tanzanian police on the social network X was hacked in order to spread false reports about the death of President Samia Suluhu Hassan," the material says.
Authorities later reported that the hacked account had been restored, but an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the security breach. It was established that the password from the account was known to several officers, including those in low positions. Investigators believe that this could have contributed to the hacking of the page.
The NetBlocks Internet monitoring group has confirmed that the platform has been blocked by all major ISPs across Tanzania.
In early May, the Tanzanian authorities blocked more than 80,000 websites, social media accounts, blogs and other online platforms. The Government stressed that these measures are aimed at protecting the mental well-being of children. It was noted that the sites were blocked for distributing "unethical content that threatens the mental health of children."
In 2017, Tanzania adopted a Regulation on electronic and Postal Communications, and it was amended in 2020. The law provides for criminal liability for content that is considered obscene, obscene, inciting hatred or capable of disrupting public order.
On April 8, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala's account on the social network X (formerly Twitter) was attacked by hackers who published a number of fake posts. One of the publications reported an alleged attack by the Russian army on "Czech units near the border with Kaliningrad."
