French President Emmanuel Macron did not rule out on Tuesday, May 13, speaking on TF1 TV channel, that the European Union (EU), together with the United States, could impose new sanctions against Russia in the coming days.

"The EU, in coordination with the United States, may impose new sanctions against Russia in the coming days," he said.

According to him, they may affect, in particular, the financial services sector, as well as the trade in hydrocarbons, RT reports.

Macron stressed that the issue of sanctions is being worked out in close coordination with Washington. The French leader also confirmed the West's readiness to increase pressure on Moscow if it "does not show a constructive position on a peaceful settlement."

Earlier in the day, the US president's special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, announced the possible imposition of the toughest US sanctions against Russia if negotiations on Ukraine stagnate, according to the website. kp.ru .

On the same day, the Handelsblatt newspaper reported that the EU countries would not be able to agree on tough measures in the new package of anti-Russian sanctions, as this would provoke protest from some countries that are part of the association. It is noted that controversial proposals were not included in the list of sanctions, as this could have caused a veto from Hungary or Slovakia.

The head of EU diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, at a press conference following the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Warsaw on May 8, said that the EC intends to adopt the 17th package of sanctions against Russia by May 20.

Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu said on April 25 that anti-Russian sanctions had not hindered Russia's economic development. He noted that the Russian economy has grown by 4.1% over the past two years.
