What happened

Unknown persons carried out an armed attack on a police patrol on the afternoon of May 5 in Makhachkala at the intersection of Kerimov and Magomedtagirov streets. According to the head of Dagestan, Sergei Melikov, this happened after traffic police officers attempted to stop a suspicious car.

Unknown persons shot the police, as reported in the Main Directorate of the Republican Ministry of Internal Affairs, three law enforcement officers were killed. Two militants were neutralized by return fire, the rest fled in a traffic police car, which was stolen from the scene of the shootout. The Interception plan was introduced in the city. Later, the car was found abandoned, according to Telegram channel 112, two militants fled. Their search continues.

The scene has been cordoned off, and law enforcement officers are working on it. The head of the region appealed to residents to remain calm.

Victims and reactions

As a result of the shooting, according to the regional Ministry of Health, three people were killed, and five more are being treated in the hospital. Among them are two Interior Ministry officers and three civilians, including a 17—year-old girl. The medical staff assesses the condition of civilians as moderate.

The Russian Investigative Committee for the Republic of Dagestan has opened a criminal case under the article on encroachment on the life of law enforcement officers (Article 317 of the Criminal Code), as well as articles on theft without intent (166 of the Criminal Code) and theft of weapons (226 of the Criminal Code).
