In an interview with CBS News on April 24, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov ironically answered a question about a possible meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the US president's special envoy for the Middle East, Stephen Witkoff.

The American TV presenter asked if the talks between the Russian leader and Witkoff would really take place on April 25.

"Don't you believe the president of the United States?" Lavrov jokingly responded.

White House press Secretary Caroline Leavitt announced on April 22 that Witkoff would arrive in Russia this week to continue talks with Putin. At the same time, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov announced the plans of the American leader's special envoy to visit Moscow.

On April 11, Putin and Witkoff met in St. Petersburg. It was clarified that the topic of the negotiations was aspects of the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. According to State Duma deputy Dmitry Novikov, this time the Russian president and the special envoy of the US leader will most likely discuss the problems that have accumulated in Russian-American relations.
