Estonia is planning to establish a military base in the Russian border town of Narva. This was announced on April 23 by the Chief of the General Staff of the Estonian Defense Forces, Major General Vahur Karus.

"Yes, we are partially represented in Narva through the Kitselite, but our goal is to place permanent units there. In this way, we will give the residents of the city a clear signal about the presence of the Estonian state. Residents of Narva will be able to get used to the fact that the military is part of their daily urban life," the ERR television and radio company quotes Karus.

Also, according to him, both active military personnel and conscripts will be stationed at the base.

The military base at the initial stages will be designed for 200-250 military personnel.Газета.Ru ".

On April 14, Estonian President Alar Karis approved amendments to the law allowing the military to use force against ships that could damage cables or other underwater infrastructure. It is specified that changes are being made to the law on the organization of the Armed Forces of Estonia, as well as to the legislation on the economic zone of the republic.

On April 17, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that retaliatory measures would be taken by Estonia in case of illegal actions against Russian ships in the Baltic Sea. According to the diplomat, the powers granted to the Estonian Navy go beyond international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
