Roskomnadzor has not received an appeal from "Veterans of Russia" with a request to ban the screening of Turkish TV series in the country, Izvestia found out. Russian russians have put forward such an initiative in order for Russian women to pay more attention to Russian men. As representatives of the organization told the editorial board, they are also trying to find understanding in the Public Chamber. Cultural figures appreciated the protest against foreign content, but disagreed. Izvestia tried to understand the reality of the Turkish threat.
What are the dangers of Turkish TV series?
The premiere of the historical blockbuster film "El Turco" with the star of Turkish TV series Jan Yaman did not have time to make noise at the Moscow cinema center "October", as a scandal broke out. The all-Russian public movement "Veterans of Russia" appealed to Roskomnadzor, the State Duma and the Ministry of Culture with a request to work out the issue of banning the screening of Turkish TV series in Russia.
According to the authors of the initiative, the reason for this request is the negative impact of Turkish TV series on Russian women's perception of the image of a man, as well as the demographic consequences of this influence. "Such propaganda is a cultural intervention that contributes to the destruction of the institution of the family and a decrease in the birth rate in Russia. It is important to consolidate the concept of destructive propaganda in legislation and clearly specify which elements in film production may fall under this term," said Ildar Rezyapov, chairman of the Veterans of Russia Movement, a volunteer of the SVO.
According to public figures, there has been a steady trend in recent years: Russian women, after watching Turkish TV series, begin to lose interest in Russian men, expecting unrealistic behavior from them, shaped by foreign film productions. This entails both the destruction of the traditional family and the deterioration of the demographic situation in the country, the authors of the appeal believe. At the same time, the opposite image is created in Russian TV series: a Russian man is portrayed as an alcoholic, a despot and a loser, while a strong and independent woman is forced to bear the entire burden of family worries. Then the image of a successful and gallant foreigner appears in the plots, to which the heroine leaves.
—As of 13:00 on March 20, Roskomnadzor had not received such an appeal," the agency's press service told Izvestia.
Izvestia decided to find out directly how serious the intentions of the Veterans of Russia are and contacted the head of the organization.
— We are planning an appeal to the Public Chamber of Russia, we want to initiate a discussion on introducing a definition of destructive influence into legislation. This applies not only to Turkish TV series, but also to a wider range of phenomena," Ildar Rezyapov told Izvestia.
In his opinion, Turkey uses culture as an instrument of influence. And this is part of the psychological struggle.
— The popularity of Turkish TV series in Russia is certainly the work of the Turkish special services. Let's ask ourselves a question: are there many Russian TV series popular in Turkey? — asks Ildar Rezyapov.
Izvestia has contacted several streaming services and TV channels for comments, including NTV, Domashny, Okko, Kinopois, Ivi, and Start. Domashny and Okko refrained from commenting. The others did not respond to the request.
They were accepted as family
Perhaps the activists raised this wave of "protest" against Turkish television production after seeing the excitement surrounding the arrival of actors from Turkey in Moscow. They are now frequent visitors to Russia. Not so long ago, the Turkish adaptation of the film "The Lackey" by Klima Shipenko, "The Lackey. The Magnificent Century" produced by the Kunay Film company. The Turkish version of the highest-grossing Russian comedy also addresses the problem of social inequality and tells about another major's re-education. Kerem Bursin, known as Serkan Bolat from Knock on My Door, played the main role in the Turkish adaptation of the Russian hit. And his colleague on the same series, actress Hande Ercel, flew to Moscow and called it a great opportunity to come to Russia. She arrived in the capital together with Young Arduch, who starred in the TV series "Love for Rent". Here, the artists presented the film "Leave it to the Wind", in which they played the main roles. Then Turdizi's fans almost tore down the cinema door in the hope of taking pictures with their idols.
The star of "The Magnificent Century", "Black Love" and "Foundation: Osman" Burak Ozchivit generally visited our country. Tickets for his performances are flying like a SHAMAN concert. The girls don't give him a pass, they catch him in the hotel and at the concert halls. Elena Bukhmak, PR director of the Moscow Evenings agency, which organized concerts of "Music of Turkish TV series" with Burak Ozcivit in different cities of Russia, told Izvestia that the Russian society has nothing to fear.: As a rule, Turkish TV series are based on so-called traditional values, where respect for parents, love for children, adherence to principles and ideals, as well as relationships ending in legal marriage between a man and a woman are considered the norm.
— Moreover, Turkish TV series are distinguished by their high production quality: Huge pavilions with complex decorations are being built for filming, the best cameramen are being invited, and they are investing in the production of musical content," added Elena Bukhmak. — Series in the genre of historical drama, for example, "The Magnificent Century" or "Foundation: Osman", can be a good help in studying world history, it is a truly high-quality product, often useful for the overall development. But in general, such initiatives of the ban usually cause the opposite result: I am sure that against the background of endless discussions in the public space, interest in Turkish TV series will only grow. The effect of Barbra Streisand — or, in our case, Burak Ozcivit — is evident.
Izvestia found an actor whose voice Ozchivit's characters speak in Russian. Daniil Eldarov has been dubbing Turkish TV series for 16 years. There are more than 60 of them in the actor's track record.
— The series saved us from unemployment when sanctions were announced against Russia and Western cinema left, — Daniel admitted. — People watched Turkish and Chinese TV series based on universal values — friendship, love, loyalty, rejection of betrayal, reverence for women, family, faith. To say that I love my family and Homeland less after that is absolute stupidity. Moreover, I don't see any negative attitude towards Russia in these series. If public figures advocate banning Turkish TV series because women react to them differently than to the heroes of domestic films, then maybe we should make films ourselves in which our men are strong, beautiful, and friendly. Or let them ban our TV shows, where men are shown as drunkards and drunks in an unflattering way.
Daniil knows Burak and knows that he loves Russia and our audience very much. Ozchivit is happily married to his colleague Fakhriye Evgen, they have two children. And, according to his Russian colleague, there is no negativity from Turkish filmmakers.
— I don't see the Turkish TV series having a bad effect on our women, and I don't agree that our women fall in love and leave for Turkey after watching enough TV shows. This phenomenon has always been there — people fall in love, get married, move to another country," dubbing actress Tatiana Shitova told Izvestia. — And if someone is looking for negativity, then why not ask yourself a question and check out the anime? Does it bother anyone that there is a lot of violence and often cruelty in anime?
Daniil Eldarov is sure that their series will not leave Russia. And people will choose what to watch themselves.

Turkish TV series have become popular in our country for a long time. In 1986, the multi-part film "The Songbird Kinglet" was released. The film with great music and beautiful actors immediately won the love of the audience. In 2012, the whole country was inspired by the characters of the TV series "Magnificent Century". He provided the TV channel that broadcast him with a decent audience share and gave an impetus to the formation of a fan community around a particular project and its stars. But soap operas from Turkey became a real cultural and social phenomenon after the beginning of its development, when Western content producers left the Russian market.
The popular love for "Knock on My Door", the remake of "The Songbird Kingfisher", "Kingfisher" and other projects from the southern country reminded many of the universal fascination with Latin American TV series in the 1990s. And the secrets of popularity here are essentially the same: beautiful romantic stories, the heat of passion, the charm of exoticism, plus, of course, hot handsome men in the main roles.
In addition, the stars of Turkish TV series, led by Burak Ozcivit, readily began to come to Russia. And since similar visits by European and American celebrities have been reduced to a minimum since 2022, all the attention of the press and the public has been focused on Turks.
However, not everyone liked it. Last summer, Vitaly Milonov, deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Family Protection, Fatherhood, Motherhood and Childhood, called for a ban on Turkish TV series in Russia, accusing them of creating an implausible image of men. The initiative had no consequences, and even colleagues in the lower house of parliament did not support Milonov. In particular, Elena Drapeko, deputy chairman of the culture Committee, said that she considers these measures unnecessary, and generally defended Turkish TV series. According to her, these works are beautifully staged and played, and the beauty of the actors is not to be envied.
