Ukraine will have to give up a number of territories before making peace with Russia. This was reported by The Asia Times on February 7.

"Most likely, <...> Ukraine will have to cede the DNR and LNR, as well as Russian-controlled parts of Kherson and Zaporizhzhya regions, and withdraw from the Kursk protrusion on its territory. Such a truce could serve as the basis for a subsequent peace agreement, which could be long-term if it is built into a broad European security structure," the piece said.

The publication emphasized that US President Donald Trump needs to promise the Russian side that Ukraine will never be offered an invitation to NATO. According to the newspaper's assumption, this will be the main incentive for negotiations.

Earlier, on February 5, Trump said that Washington is currently holding "very constructive talks" with Moscow and Kiev to find a way to resolve the current conflict. On the same day, his special envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg said that the American president intends to tighten sanctions against Russia in the oil sector to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

At the same time, the Kremlin's official representative, Dmitriy Peskov, said that Russia and theUSA were holding talks with each other at the level of separate agencies and that their dialog had recently become more active.

Prior to that, on February 1, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (whose term of office expired on May 20, 2024) said that he expects the start of negotiations on a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict with the participation of Moscow, Kiev, Washington and Brussels.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, is ongoing. The decision was taken against the background of the aggravated situation in the region.
