Former French President Sarkozy has been required to wear an electronic bracelet
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was obliged to wear an electronic bracelet as part of the execution of the sentence in the "wiretapping" case. This was reported on February 7 by the newspaper La Presse with reference to the prosecutor's office.
According to the newspaper, on January 28, Sarkozy was summoned to a Paris court to determine the terms of punishment under the sentence. An unnamed source said that as a result, the beginning of the execution of the sentence was scheduled for February 7.
"According to the Paris prosecutor's office, the bracelet was put on his ankle in the early morning at his home", - stated in the material.
It is specified that since then Sarkozy will be able to leave his apartment only at certain hours, pre-determined during the trial. It is noted that the former President "continues to challenge the legality of the conviction".
Earlier, December 18, 2024, Reuters reported that the Court of Cassation of France upheld the sentence of Sarkozy on charges of corruption and influence peddling. At that time, among other things, it was specified about his wearing an electronic tracking bracelet.
In October 2023, Sarkozy was indicted twice in a 2007 campaign finance case. The trial itself in the case of financing former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's 2007 presidential campaign of Sarkozy is scheduled to take place in 2025. In May this year, the ex-president's wife, singer and model Carla Bruni, was summoned to testify.
In the spring of 2018, the former interpreter of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, Miftah Missouri, reported Gaddafi's financing of Sarkozy's election campaign.
In May 2023, a Paris appeals court upheld a previous instance's ruling in the "wiretapping case" that sentenced Sarkozy to three years in prison, two of which were suspended. The case is based on intercepted conversations between the former president and his former lawyer Thierry Erzog, in which Sarkozy allegedly asked to help former Constitutional Court judge Gilbert Azibert get a prestigious post in Monaco, and in exchange tried to get information about the investigation into the illegal financing of his presidential campaign in 2012.
