Imports of new passenger cars to Russia halved

In January 2025, 31.9 thousand new passenger cars were imported into Russia. This is twice less than in the same month last year, according to the analytical agency "Avtostat" on February 7. At the same time, the indicator of imports of passenger cars with mileage year-on-year remained almost unchanged and amounted to 19.4 thousand cars (-2%).

"Before the increase in the utilization fee (in the fall) there was an excess of cars imported. And at the moment it does not make sense to import more cars, as the market does not need it," the analysts explained.

The leader in the volume of imports among new cars was the brand Haval, and among the models most often imported crossover Omoda C5. Among used cars, the leading brand is Toyota, and among models - Honda Freed.

It is noted that 91.6% of all new passenger cars imported in January arrived in Russia from China. Belarus and Kyrgyzstan accounted for 2.4% of imports, while Kazakhstan took only 0.6%. According to analysts, alternative imports to Russia via other countries have been greatly reduced and minimized.

From Japan, 53.2% of all used passenger cars were imported in January, most of them being models with small engine capacity. The second place in the share of imports was South Korea (16.6%), followed by China (16.4%), which a year ago this country was not even in the top ten countries in this ranking.

Earlier in the day it was reported that in Russia for the year cars of a number of Chinese brands in the secondary market became cheaper, the price decreased by 15-19%. The most noticeable decrease in the average price of cars with mileage brand Changan: the change amounted to 19.2%. The second place is occupied by the Korean brand Genesis, whose cars lost 18% in price.
