The administration of President Donald Trump plans to leave 294 employees of the U.S. Agency for International Development USAID out of more than 10 thousand employees of the agency worldwide. This was reported by Reuters on February 6.

It is specified that the main humanitarian agency of Washington became the object of the program of reorganization of the government, headed by American entrepreneur Ilon Musk.

Sources said only 294 agency employees will be allowed to keep their jobs, including only 12 in the Africa bureau and eight in the Asia bureau.

"This is outrageous," said former USAID head John Brian Atwood, adding that a mass layoff of employees would effectively destroy the agency.

Earlier, on February 5, Russia's State Duma called the USAID organization a criminal network. Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin cited several USAID projects, calling them crimes against humanity. For example, the agency funded research in the field of biological weapons.

On that day, Bloomberg reported that the team of billionaire and entrepreneur Ilon Musk, who heads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), gained access to the room where secret USAID documents are kept. In addition, more than 100 agency employees have been placed on administrative leave.

On January 20, the White House website published Trump's executive order suspending Washington's development assistance to other countries for 90 days. Later, on January 25, Reuters reported that USAID froze programs to support foreign countries, including Ukraine, after a State Department dispatch approved by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
