Regular direct air communication between Russia and Abkhazia is planned to be resumed in May this year. This was reported by the press service of the Russian Ministry of Transport on February 6.
This issue was discussed at the meeting of Russian Transport Minister Roman Starovoit with Abkhazian political figure Badra Gunba in Moscow.
"Regular direct air communication is planned to be resumed in May this year, after a break of more than 30 years," - stated in the publication on the website.
According to the ministry, a number of Russian airlines have expressed their readiness to resume flights between the countries. In addition, a test flight has already been scheduled for February 7.
Earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said during a meeting with Gunba that the early opening of the international airport in Sukhum, which has not functioned since 1993, should contribute to the development of tourism in Abkhazia. He also noted that the Russian Federation intends to further develop relations with Abkhazia, which will further contribute to mutual growth of economies and trade turnover.
Before that, on January 30, Counselor of the Embassy of Abkhazia in Russia Kan Tania pointed out that the people of Abkhazia choose to be together with Russia, the states are united by language, culture, history and ruble.
