Heavy snowfall in Japan injures at least nine people
At least one person died and nine were injured due to heavy snowfall in northern Japan. This was reported by News Goo on February 6, citing Cabinet Secretary General Yoshimasu Hayashi.
"As of the morning of February 6, heavy snowfall has caused one death and four serious injuries. There was damage to buildings and about 790 homes were left without power," the publication said.
Hayashi urged citizens to take precautions and prevent accidents while outdoors.
In addition, 38 sections of expressways were closed, 24 railway routes were suspended and 134 flights were canceled.
Earlier, on February 5, at least four people were injured in traffic accidents in Japan as a result of the abnormal amount of snowfall. Due to the record snowfall, traffic is expected to be halted on some bus and rail routes in Hokkaido, as well as in Tohoku, Hokuriku and other regions.
