Russia has requested a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine for February 17
Russia has requested a meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Ukraine for February 17. Dmitry Polyansky, Russia's first deputy permanent representative to the UN, said in Telegram on February 5.
"Meanwhile, our Western colleagues, of course, do not want to let the world forget about Ukraine. Already in the first days they requested for February 24 a meeting on the 3rd anniversary of the start of the UWO <...> We were not in debt and immediately requested for February 17 a meeting in connection with the 10th anniversary of the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2202, which approved the Minsk Package of Measures," he wrote.
According to Polyansky, the meeting will be an occasion to discuss the "failure" of preventive diplomacy due to the actions of the West, which set Kiev up for conflict with Moscow.
The day before, on February 3, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that international structures, including the UN Secretariat, are silent about the crimes of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in Kursk Region and thus disgrace themselves. In particular, the world organizations speak about these events in unspecific terms and do not mention geographical names.
On January 31, the Russian side promised to transfer information about the crimes of the AFU to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
On February 2, Russian Human Rights Ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova called on the UN, the Council of Europe (CoE) and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to condemn the AFU attack on the boarding school in Sudzha in Kursk Region. The ombudsman called this attack by Ukrainian militants a bloody provocation and a crime against humanity.
The special operation to protect Donbass, the beginning of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the aggravated situation in the region.
