International Basketball Federation extends suspension of Russia and Belarus

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has extended the suspension of Russia and Belarus from competition. This was stated to "Izvestia" on February 6 in the press service of the organization.

"The FIBA Central Council confirmed the extension of the current status quo of the two national federations of Russia and Belarus regarding their participation in FIBA competitions at its last meeting, which was held in December 2024," the basketball body said.

It noted, however, that consultations on the issue are ongoing.

"FIBA continues to consult with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) on this matter, taking into account the decisions of the Central Council and the unique aspects of basketball as a team sport," FIBA added.

FIBA suspended the national teams as well as all men's and women's clubs in Russia and Belarus in March 2022.

Earlier, on January 24, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia would continue "patient work" to return its athletes to the world stage.

On April 26, 2024, FIBA extended the suspension of Russian and Belarusian teams in competitions under its auspices until December of the same year.

In February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that international sports federations should not allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete.
