- Politico wrote that the EU is "fed up" with von der Leyen's attempts to run foreign policy
European Union countries are "fed up" with the attempts of European Commission (EC) head Ursula von der Leyen to direct the foreign policy of the association. This was reported by Politico on February 5, citing sources.
According to the sources, the EC head did not consult with EU leaders on the decision to announce a partnership agreement with Jordan, as well as the allocation of €3 billion in financial aid to Amman.
"We were confronted with a fait accompli, even though we are the ones who will finance [the agreement]. This is not the first time von der Leyen has pulled a stunt like this because she wants to build relations with world leaders. The member states are fed up with it," the material says.
MEP Nacho Sanchez Amor told the paper that von der Leyen "uses any occasion" to try to at least partially establish control over the EU's foreign policy. He added that "it is necessary to clarify" the powers of EU authorities in this case, as unilateral decision-making "confuses EU partners around the world."
Earlier, on December 19, 2024, Politico reported that the leaders of some EU countries are annoyed that von der Leyen makes decisions independently. According to the publication, they asked the head of the European Council, António Costa, to "moderate" her.
Before that, on December 8, it was reported that the new agreement von der Leyen Mercosur may cause a split of the European Union because of the emerging differences between France, Germany and Belgium.
On December 7, it became known that more than a thousand citizens of EU countries supported a lawsuit against the head of the EC because of possible violations with vaccines against COVID-19 during the pandemic.
November 27, Austrian politician Harald Wilimsky in the European Parliament (EP) did not support the new composition of the EC headed by von der Leyen. According to him, the new commission advocates mass migration, imprisonment, incitement of war, deindustrialization and decline of Europe.
