The chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, Grigory Karasin, has said that Russian President Vladimir Putin has publicly revealed the political truth about the illegitimacy of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose term of office expired on May 20, 2024.

In a conversation with Lenta.Ru on Wednesday, January 29, Karasin emphasized that Putin only stated the fact, because Zelensky's term of office has expired, but he is "quite brazen and insolent to make decisions, and fateful, strategic ones."

The senator noted that the Russian leader publicly revealed the political truth.

"How the European Union, the West and so on will react to this is an open question," Karasin said.

According to him, everyone should realize that Zelensky is an illegitimate leader pretending that "nothing like this happened."

Earlier, on January 29, Aydin Sezer, a Turkish political scientist and former Turkish trade representative in Moscow, believed that the Russian president's words about Zelensky's illegitimacy could prompt the West to start a discussion on the issue of the latter's powers. He expressed the opinion that US President Donald Trump could start such discussions, aif.ru reported.

On January 28, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky had no rights to sign anything because of his illegitimacy. He reminded that with the possible signing of documents between the parties, Zelensky would need to legally confirm his legitimacy, 360.ru noted.

According to the provisions of the Ukrainian constitution, Zelensky's presidential term ended on May 20. Elections were supposed to be held in March this year, but they were canceled due to the martial law imposed by the president, effective from February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on May 17, 2024, that the issue of the legitimacy of the president should be resolved within the Ukrainian state, while the issue of the legality of the Ukrainian political leader's stay in office remains important for Russia.
