- Durov cited PRC's education system as the reason why the West is lagging behind in AI
The education system in China, which encourages fierce competition, is the reason for the country's superiority over the West in the field of artificial intelligence. This statement was made on January 29 by Pavel Durov, the founder of the Telegram messenger and businessman.
According to him, at international Olympiads, representatives of the People's Republic of China have long surpassed students from other countries in the field of math and programming.
"When it comes to producing outstanding students in math and science, China's secondary education system is superior to that of the West. It encourages fierce competition among students, a principle borrowed from the highly efficient Soviet model," he wrote in his Telegram channel.
Durov clarified that Western schools, on the contrary, discourage competition and oppose the public announcement of grades and ratings in educational institutions. He added that this contributes to lowering the motivation of students.
"Reality <...> has public grades and ratings - whether in sports, business, science or technology. AI tests that demonstrate DeepSeek's superiority are one such public ranking," he added.
According to Durov, if the US doesn't reform its education system, "China's growing dominance in technology seems inevitable."
The day before, CNBC tech columnist Deirdre Boza said that China's new DeepSeek chatbot will compete with Google and OpenAI. She believes that if such models develop and become more affordable, it could lead to a rapid lowering of barriers to entry in the AI development market.
On Monday, January 27, the media wrote that the excitement around the appearance of Chinese chatbot DeepSeek provoked a stock market crash in the United States.
In December 2024, Deirdre Boza, in an interview with CNBC, already stated the advantages of the Chinese DeepSeek, noting that this model will be a real breakthrough in the AI sphere and will challenge the U.S. dominance in the technology industry.
